I don't have an answer to this although I am also interested in the answer. I love this Ribbon Rose. It deserves to be hung where all can enjoy it.

Hi Stephany - no I don't use no flow as often I do a picture that I want to be same front and back - scarves for instance - I use the normal Chinese mix that we use to size paper but leave out the alum
teaspoon of cornflour to mug of water - mix - microwave until it turns opaque - approx 2 mins - two coats is about it but try on a sample piece - if you want to size it more permanently you can add quarter teaspoon alum but with the alum it doesn't wash out completely

Hi Stephany
Thanks for that I went on to Dharma and found another site "www.greatart.co.uk" who are based in Germany but have a big set-up in the UK they emailed me back this morning to say the UK branch cant send to SA but their mother h/o in Germany can and gave me their contact details. They sell Javana and Dupont and have some silk stuff called "Artys" and their silk fabric is cheaper than the US. A friend of mine is also going to put me in touch with a good friend of his from Thailand who will be able to source pure raw Thai silk, probably cheaper than anywhere else.
My main aim for going to the States is to visit with my friend who Ive not seen in 30 years is just to spend time together so we are probably going to have a lot of catching up to do. They are not exactly rolling in the dough (but a bit better off than me at this stage) and they are blessing me with the ticket so I think we will be quite limited in the things we do as I will be on a shoe string budget with the exchange rate (which last night was R9.44 to the $1), so i'll need at least R6000 to have $600 odd and i'm not sure what that will buy me (somehow I don't think a lot) and I will never expect them to pay for my sightseeing. I know Kim said we could do Universal/MGM, the usual Hollywood sites and she said we could go to Vegas and probably have a meal in China Town and just hit the shops cause I've been told of the variety available in the States is awesome. Because I'm not familiar with LA, or how far things are from each other or what things cost I'm not so sure about anything else at this stage. If you have any suggestions please feel free to suggest, also with prices of things even MacDonalds (we have them here to, baby cheese bugers are R7 and double cheap cheese burgers are R12 Big Macs who knows multiply that by 9.44 and you see what I mean).
Where about in California do you live? Are you far from LA. How long have you been painting. Are you married/single/divorced/widowed, do you have kids? Im a nosey parker arent I. It would be such a pity to spend all that money and only see LA but at this stage I dont have much choice. Im hoping to fly Cape Town - Paris - LA - NY - Cape Town and spend at least a night in NY and maybe a few days in Paris to visit friends. The price difference is about R150. I spent 4 and a half months in Paris just after my son died and commuted to the UK and Belgium regularly and fell totally in love with Paris.
I will visit with Kim's mom (who is in the early stages of Altzheimers, her sister and her kids and hopefully get to see her son and his kids too. Although we have not lost touch in all this time and my mom and brother and his family met up with Kim and her mom in Orlando about 5 years ago, we are still very good friends. I saw her son when he was a baby and mine was just over a year old. I've since lost my son and my dad suddenly within 16 months of each other, buried 12 other members of my family and friends in the same time, lost my job a month after my son died, got hi-jacked, moved from JHB to CT with no job and had to start over, not easy but I'm still alive and kicking and still have a sense of humour of sorts. I have a magnificent view of the ocean which I find very soothing and inspiring and that helps. I did not think I would be and honestly believed they would have to scrape me off the pavement and dump me in a home for the bewildered. Anyway I guess Im an eternal optimist or too dum to quit.
Thank you so much for your responses it is so nice to correspond with people who are on the ball. It is also so nice to get to know people with similar interests. Have you always been creative. I thank God each day for my creativity. I also read a lot, love music, watching sport on TV, movies and TV I watch when I have to but prefer my art and reading and music.
One other thing I wanted to know is do you sell your work, where, how and at what prices as I don't have a clue what the market is like or what prices things are sold for here and elsewhere. I've been making acetate mobiles, cards and window stickies as well as one off pieces of costume jewellery made with crystals, swarovski crystals, venietian glass, glass and ceramics and semi-prescious stones for the last few years but have been out of touch with the market for the last year and a half. But in the last year everyone and their mother is making jewellery so the market has not been good, though my stuff is a little more expensive and exclusive because they are one off designed pieces and I use expensive components. With money being so tight everywhere seems everyone is going for cheap plastic and I don't use it. anyway I don't do recession. ("Ostrich Syndrome" if I stick my head in the sand it will go away or not be happening ha ha ha or like a kid, cover my eyes and no-one can see me).
I'm told that I may have a heard time getting a visa to the USA cause I have to prove that I will come back. Although I have a partner of 12 years we have not married and apparently that wont help me. Im hoping that if I can use the trip as a bit of a buying trip for the silk things would help as I would like to start a bit of a silk painting school and small supplier of items when I get back as I have really been battling to find a job so I may as well do something I love and earn a living from it at the same time. Im just hoping and praying that I can put enough money aside for the trip and to buy some things.
Well enough of my mind and fingers running away from me. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Stephany
Thanks for responding. I spent all day yesterday on the Dharma website and will try the Thai Trading just now. I was like a kid in a giant toy shop. Only problem is with the excange rate favouring the Dollar so much the prices are mostly too much in South African Rands for me at this stage (R10 to $1). I am dying to get into painting on silk again but I will have to wait a bit and try and save up some money. Where do you live. A friend of mine is bringing me over to the States in Aug and Sept she is in LA but I think both places are to far to drive from there but I'll have to check it out as I have no idea of the distances. Your work is gorgeous keep it up. Regards Karen van Deventer

many thanks and so glad you liked the harvest moon. I love this site - because we can see so many great pieces of work. What's the history behind your fisherman on the water buffalo piece? Did you travel to Asia? Would love to know more about it.
