I have got to ask..........How did you get this painted? I drew a lion to put on a flag and it turned out ok but I really like this one.... I still plan on painting a lion with a mane that looks like it is on fire..... That is another thing I need...
Well, I have actaully just began to dye these. I wet it and put it in a plastic ( large) rectangular pan, and just let it lay in there however it fell and then I took the dyes and just painted it on the silk with a paintbrush and a soft sponge bru...
Hi LIsa - see you're experimenting with gutta and resist. Gutta must be dry cleaned to be removed and water-soluble resist can sometimes be quite a challenge to remove. I've given up on the resist (Jacquard water-based clear because it's almost impossible to remove - I think they changed their formula last year.) Give some thought to either thickener which you add to the dye for control (works great - Dharma brand) or use Magic Sizing to initially spray your silk and then use it as a medium for painting - I use a combination of these two methods and also use metallic water-soluble resist which is not removed. Thank you Lisa for your nice comment. hru the pictures I can see that you are enjoying your painting. Your flags are very nice and colorful. Very good vibe!
Thank you for your comment - for gutta that is NOT water based you need to use white spirits or thinners (what you wash house painting brushes in when they are oil based) - white spirit is the best - does not damage silk - soak silk for about 20 mins in this then hang to dry (all this done outside because of fumes) - when it is dry hand wash as normal and use fabric conditioner - if you are doing more than one piece of silk start with the lightest ones first - as soon as the W/spirit starts to get dirty change it - Alternatively check that your dyes are dry cleanable and send items to dry cleaners - solvent based guttas give better lines but all the above is why I rather use water based gutta or wax
Hi Lisa
Loved looking at your work! Is that one of your children holding the flags? I especially liked your pink and blue floral scarf - really beautiful - love the design and the sort of semi abstract nature to the flowers!
