Has anyone created pictures on silk velvet? I have only so far tried scarves and ready devored squares.I am wondering about techniques? I suppose freeform on a large piece of silk velvet may be the way to go?

Pauline, From now on, I just play with colors on silk velvet. Never tried gutta or wax. Painting my abstract design on scarfs, small jackets made of silk velvet, I use cold wax as a second step in my dyes painting. I can tell you it is working well. I don't have very precise design but I am quite sure that it can be possible.
I also use Discharge Paste after the steaming with an iron and the effects are fantastic.

Hope that it helps you.

Hi Jean-Louis
Thank you so much for your reply.I started a discussion on cold wax but nobody has replied so I am so pleased that you have mentioned it. So it is good to use this on velvet - I was wondering if it had any different uses than hot wax and in the UK Guild newsletter which on your page you say you belong to it says to use it on WET silk? Are you using it on velvet like normal wax? And on wet or dry velvet? I have looked at your page and visited your website and love your work though I cannot find any pictures showing your velvet. Do you have any?
I haven't ever used discharge paste. I thought that it must contain really dangerous chemicals to be able to remove the colour. Could you tell me more about this? You say you use it AFTER steaming.Do you apply it to the velvet with a brush and then iron? Do you then wash it and the colour out or is it like a bleach?
I love experimenting and trying out new ideas so thank you for putting new suggestions my way. I used to visit and chat in the yahoo silkpainting group where you said you are a moderator before the end of 2002 and I notice that I am still listed in the members!
Once again thank you for your help

Hi Osyth
Could you post some photos? Would love to see! For the butterflies did you paint them freehand or using resist? If you used resist what sort did you use and did you have to apply it to both sides of the velvet?
